Core Purpose of the Job

The General Manager: External Communication is the functional lead for External Communications in Group Corporate Affairs This role is responsible for:

  • Strategy formulation and custodian of the Global external communication, media management including social media, conferences and partnership strategy and framework.
  • Formulation and delivery of group global events

The GM: External Communications reports to the Group Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer

Key Performance Areas

The GM: External Communications will be accountable to achieve the following objectives:

Strategy Development and Implementation

– Lead the creation of the functional strategy in line with the overarching business goals

– Drive effective implementation of the strategy by means of providing direction, structure, frameworks, models, plans and roadmaps

– Oversee regular review of the functional strategy and roadmap to ensure its alignment with the changing dynamics of the internal and external ecosystem

Staff Leadership and Management

– Build and manage a high performing team by providing leadership, role clarity, training and career development

– Source, induct and manage talent in accordance with legislative guidelines

– Continually develop a culture of strong collaboration and effective team working

– Ensure open communication channels with staff and implement change management interventions where necessary

– Set KPIs and provide regular performance feedback through a well-defined and implemented performance review program

– Develop and implement a training plan in order to build and develop skills within the team

– Encourage knowledge transfer through the implementation of a knowledge transfer plan and drive continuous improvement philosophy through the knowledge transfer plan

Governance

Strategic Meetings

– Hold strategic meetings, ensure relevant participation and provide guidance and input in the various discussions

– Drive enterprise-wide conference participation framework, corporate affairs sponsorship and partnership initiatives, elicit inputs from relevant parties

– Drive adequate risk mitigation and controls and elicit inputs from relevant parties

– Perform evaluation baseline of Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and KPIs

Escalations

– Escalate issues that will result in severe time, scope, productivity, and cost or resource impact

– Manage and provide solutions to escalations that have multiple processes / functions impact on critical path of service delivery

Function Tactical

– Review all projects initiated (internal or global)

– Review key risks, issues and dependencies and set mitigation actions

– Sign-off / make decisions regarding tactical changes

Performance

– Monitor performance and alignment with MTN global strategy

– Ensure alignment between the various stakeholders and customers

– SLA approval and exception performance review

Reporting

– Report on a periodic basis to the Group Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer relating to progress made within the function and in accordance with the measurement metrics set by the organisation

Budgets

– Develop and manage project initiative budgets in line with business objectives

Operational Delivery

Functional Leadership: As the functional leader of the External Communications vertical, the General Manager is accountable to:

– Establish, monitor and align the direction, strategy and results of the External Communications vertical, collectively and as individual work areas

– Lead and drive an integrated, relevant and forward-looking strategy and philosophy for Global External Communication department

– Accountable for the continuous evolution and improvement of external communication, social media and sponsorship and partnership frameworks and methodologies to effectively communicate with external parties.

– Monitor true-value metrics to measure the impact and benefit of Global External Communication to MTN. Drive continuous improvement across all function verticals

– Global owner of group’s social media platforms including group website, conferencing strategy, events management and corporate affairs sponsorships and partnership programmes

– Champion the effort to gain and sustain MTN Leadership commitment to adopt external communication principles consistently across projects and initiatives across the group

– Active positioning of MTN’s intellectual property and employer of choice brand towards the external marketplace

– Accountable to periodically present Executive / Management Dashboards on the Global External Communications progress, plans and outcomes, to the Chief Regulatory and Corporate Affairs Officer and MTN group leadership (as required)

Delivery Leadership: As the delivery leader of the External Communications vertical, the General Manager is accountable for the following:

Overview: Global External Communication

– Custodian of the global external communication strategy, framework and model for MTN. This includes Media and Online Reputation Management, global events management, sponsorship and partnership programmes.

– Oversee and authorise the global external communication and plan (including playbooks). Perform periodic reviews to ensure financial prudence and timely re-planning as needed.

– Strategic oversight for the development of futuristic and market aligned policies, practices, standards and the roadmap for Global External Communication for MTN.

– Establish standardised Impact assessment framework, measures and metrics to enable periodic and consistent evaluation of external communications initiatives

– Provide strategic direction for the development of innovative external communication enablers such as digitally enabled Global toolkits/high-impact design approaches/editorial styles/image libraries/approved multi-format content channels/social-media management/ multi-media digital campaign management kits, events guidelines, conference participation strategy and corporate affairs sponsorship and partnership[ policies and strategy.

– Drive measures for segmented communication through external profiling and segmentation techniques, targeted/preferred channels, content toolkits, use of specific multi-modal mediums

– Champion, promote and strategically plan for the deployment of emerging communication technologies / digital visual aids / mobile and social media platforms to enhance the usage, viewership, adoption and overall impact of external communications

– Developing and embedding controls and quality protocols in place to ensure that the external communications, including crisis communication responses and escalation deliverables are timely, culturally sensitive, creative communications, reflecting the highest quality, is compelling and aligns with the values of MTN.

– Accountable for MTN’s Global Publications, Announcements, Newsletters etc. across various digital/electronic channels. Ensuring credibility, timeliness, relevance, consistency, uptake, dependability and ease of access

– Ensure close coordination of External Communication team with other communication functions such as the Investor Relations team, Engagement and Internal Communications team etc. to ensure alignment and consistency in communication.

– Advisor to Opco Leadership and local External Communication teams, on need basis for key global external communication roll outs and establish alignment on best practices.

Media Management (traditional and social media)

– As part of communications plans, develop a media engagement plan for the group

– Implement media management policy across the group

– Develop media partnership programmes including tier 1 markets

– Ensure timely response to all media queries

– Social listening, issue scanning and media monitoring tools

– Conduct period media dipstick surveys to ensure continuous improvement in managing relationships

Corporate Affairs sponsorships, conference management and global events

– Accountable for delivering strategic corporate affairs sponsorships aligned to MTN’s strategy.

– Oversee and authorise the corporate affairs sponsorships, events and conferences budget and plan for Manco. Perform periodic reviews to ensure financial prudence and timely re-planning as needed

– Provide strategic direction for the design and delivery components of events to ensure alignment with the value drivers and cultural framework of the organization

– Management review of relevant strategies, key metrics and direct-action plans for improvements/enhancements/ corrections

Job Requirements

Requirements

Education:

– Minimum of 4-year tertiary degree (specialization in Business Communication/ Literature/ Management/Human Resources/Behavioural Sciences/ as appropriate)

– MBA or Masters (advantageous)

– Relevant certification / accreditation / membership with professional body such as South African Communications Association, Exhibition and Event Association of Southern Africa (advantageous)

– Fluent in English and language of country preferable

Experience:

– Minimum 8-10 years’ experience

– Minimum 5 years of senior management experience in External Communications with specific focus on external communications, brand management, sponsorships and events

– Worked across diverse cultures and geographies
